When you change your domain's nameservers or DNS records, the update may not be visible everywhere immediately. This process is known as DNS propagation.

How long does DNS propagation take?

Many DNS changes begin appearing within a few hours, but complete propagation can take up to 24–48 hours depending on the DNS record, internet provider and cached information.

What happens during propagation?

DNS information is stored temporarily by internet providers and DNS resolvers around the world. When you make a change, these systems need time to refresh their cached information.

Because of this, different visitors may temporarily receive different results when accessing your domain.

  • Your website may load from the new server for some visitors.
  • Other visitors may temporarily see the previous website.
  • Recently changed DNS records may not appear immediately.
  • Your own computer or network may continue using cached DNS information for a period of time.

Do I need to do anything?

Usually, no. Once the correct nameservers or DNS records have been saved, propagation happens automatically.

Important

Avoid repeatedly changing your nameservers or DNS records while waiting for propagation. Additional changes can make troubleshooting more difficult and may restart the process for the records you modify.

What if my domain still isn't working?

First, verify that your domain is using the correct nameservers:

ns1.mypixelhosting.com
ns2.mypixelhosting.com

If your DNS changes have had sufficient time to propagate and your website is still unavailable, sign in to your MyPixelHosting Client Area and open a support ticket. We'll help you verify the configuration.
